Tools: Knives You Can't Live Without

Knives are literally the most important part of your kitchen. You simply can’t do anything without them! But, you don’t need ALL of the knives to be able to cook a great meal. So, I’m here to show you the top 3 knives in my kitchen and why I love them.

The Chef’s Knife

  • This is a multi-purpose knife with a smooth, sharp blade ranging from 6 to 14 inches. When using a chef’s knife, try to keep the knife on your cutting board at all times, chopping by moving the knife from the heel of the blade (nearest the handle) to the tip. These are extremely versatile knives and can be used to dice, slice, chop, filet, and more.

The Paring Knife

  • This is a knife with a smooth, sharp blade, smaller than that of a chef’s knife. Because of its size the paring knife will get more precise cuts, and you have more control when using it. Paring knives are great for cutting small fruits and veggies, and for peeling produce.

The Serrated Knife

  • When you think serrated knife think bread, bagels, and tomatoes (a great line-up). Serrated knives have long rigged blade which makes cutting into something with a hard exterior but soft interior easier!

So, there are your three musketeers of the knife world. But before you go, let me give you a top tip on taking care of your knives. You should never put your knives in the dishwasher because the constant contact with hot water will cause the blade to dull. Instead, wash them in warm and soapy water, drying them immediately after being cleaned to prevent rusting. Now, slice away!
