Cooking Methods: Sautéing

No matter what type of cuisine you’re into making, there’s a pretty good chance that sautéing is going to be part of it. Sautéing may seem and look easy, but it’s important to nail down a few basic steps so you don’t end up with food that is burnt on the outside and raw on the inside—no will be into that, except maybe your dog. Stick with me on this one, and I’ll take you through my foolproof methods for sautéing so that you can feed your family and friends, not just your pets.

I start by preheating my pan and then adding a thin layer of oil to it. I prefer to use oil over butter when I sauté because I don’t want to risk having my butter burn. Once the oil starts to look glossy, you’re ready for the next step.

Throw your food (gently :)) into the pan. This is when I like to add a little salt and pepper for extra flavor, and you can add any other herbs or spices that you’re feeling. Have fun with it.

After a few minutes, begin to toss around the contents of your pan so that all sides can cook evenly. You’ll know your food is ready when everything looks evenly brown, but if you aren’t sure go ahead and give it a test taste...you should always be tasting throughout the cooking process!

instructions:

  • Heat pan on high

  • Add oil to pan and wait until it starts to shimmer

  • Put food of choice into pan and add salt & pepper

  • After a few minutes, when your food begins to gently move from the oil, toss food around in pan and cook evenly

  • Continue tossing until food is cooked to your liking

Don’t be afraid to get sassy with your sautéing. Now you’ve got the skills to sauté like a boss so tell your friends, your parents, your grandparents, and your neighbors (unless you don’t want everyone showing up to your house for dinner).
